Highways into the Past
Fly into beautiful Tangahoe Station and be transformed by the solitude and beauty as you take a one hour walk down to the tranquil Whanganui River.
The walk is all down hill through regenerating native bush. Native birds will be seen as you pass through ponga trees and stands of kanuka as you walk on this old dray road. Marvel at the endeavours of the pioneering family who use to cart their wool bales on the horse drawn drays down this winding road to meet the river transport.
Join the jetboat at the river and take an exhilarating ride up the beautiful Whanganui River with its tranquil waters and steep bush clad cliffs. Your guide will tell many stories of the Whanganui and its people on the journey. From the river a 45 minute walk take you to the Bridge to Nowhere. Your guide will tell you of the hardship and despair which eventually drove the early European settlers from the area.
After lunch return to your let boat for the ride downstream. You have the option of canoeing the last 1 hour of the journey or returning all the way to Pipiriki by jet boat.
From Pipiriki, the shuttle bus will return you to National Park, the Chateau Airfield or the Chateau Tongariro.
